Chuck Palahniuk in S.F.

by

Last night, Chuck Palahniuk spoke at Booksmith in San Francisco. Chuck read two unpublished short stories, and gave away plenty of prizes. A few lucky souls won artificial limbs and inflatable moose heads. I joined KD for this event, and we both walked away with signed copies of “Rant: the Oral Biography of Buster Casey.” I asked Chuck to autograph the book to Jesus.

The lecture hall was standing-room only, and the air was very stuffy. KD’s friend (from writing workshop) blacked-out during Q & A. Chuck took a break while a swarm of cell phones called 911. The paramedics arrived, and drama ensued. In the end, KD’s friend was okay.

Chuck wrapped-up the night with a rousing tribute to existentialism. I was moved.
